Isle of Man Adventure Race 2011 - day 1.

48 competitors, twice as many supporters and a crowd of spectators.

Line-up of the sea swimmers just before the start - the sea swim was also supported by Speedo.

 Geoff Corkish MHK gave a short speech then started the 1km sea swim at exactly 10am. Geoff was also on the beach to congratulate individual competitors at the finish. The course included the eddy current across the bay,  making it a real challenge!

 Some phenomenal performances - pic George Shaw, Captain of the 'Adventure Club Outsiders' team winning the sea kayak race, having also won the sea swim with a clear lead on the final stretch.

Mountain Bike mass start on the West Coast.

Russel Sansom (Sammo) in pole position on the Mountain Bike route. Sammo from team 'Hardly Athletic' won both the Bike and the Hill Run the following day.

 Kim Tastagh competing in the 'Green Mann Spring' team, burning off strong competition from Ollie Keenan 'Youth Scholarship' team, to take 3rd place in the sea kayaking.

At 16 years old Kim and team mate Lucas Croyden are the youngest athletes to compete to date. Kim also finished 6th in the Bike event earning him the prize for Best Newcomer.

Even More Basking Sharks...

After a successful day paddling with the basking sharks, we set out from Peel in the evening for a family paddle...  

Perfect glassy sea conditions and more basking sharks awaited us! 

Six lucky pupils from Ramsey Grammar School were awarded a Sea Kayak Trip with us, as part of the school's reward system for outstanding pupils. 

An excellent paddle... Well done for your achievements.

A Beautiful Evening Off Niarbyl

Wildlife galore joined us on our sunny Evening Paddle last Friday. Still warm from the day, we paddled off Niarbyl bay in our t-shirts. 

Once again, we were lucky enough to spot a feeding basking shark, who we met again on our return. 

A peregrine falcon provided the perfect opportunity to test out the new camera's action shot potential.

Training drills in the Tidal Races

 Sunday afternoon's Intermediate sea kayak training session used the inner Sound tidal race on the South Coast of the Isle of Man to practice group wet drills, balance and control in the moving wave train. An exciting few hours and everyone in the group progressed as confidence increased. A very enjoyable session!

The morning 'Beginners' and 'Improver' sea kayak training sessions also paddled out from Port Erin bay, the more experienced group heading down the coast and across the Sound to have a break on the Calf of Man.
Bright and sunny with a mixture of wind ensuring all got a full body workout, and sun-tan  during the day : )

A few new faces in the morning - looking forward to continuing to helping you to discover the delights of Sea Kayaking on the stunning Isle of Man coastline.

Sea Kayaking with Basking Sharks today!

'Hardly Athletic' Adventure Race Team chose this evening to complete their kayak safety training session prior to the Adventure Race in two weeks time...

 We passed 6 Basking Sharks on our paddle off Peel, before returning to the bay to practice wet skills.

last day in May...

Group sea kayak trips at Port St Mary

 The morning session was mostly novices and after some initial training, we paddled out of the bay. Using the rolling swell outside the harbour to practice paddling in conditions, finishing with a race on the flat! 

Conditions allowed for a foray down the coast for the afternoon trip, visiting Sugarloaf Cave and surrounding area, it was teeming with birdlife! The lads had spotted a Basking Shark the previous day off Black Head, nearby.

 Another terrific day in the sun, and we're now entering June.

The Isle of Man Adventure Race is less than 3 weeks away : )
