variable practice

Got back from the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland, on Friday evening...
...winter climbing with Jim is always a great adventure! This based ourselves at Carn Mhor B&B in Aviemore, a short stroll from the Ski Ing Doo Restaurant, and close to the Northern Corries : )
With many of the crags buried under recent snowfall, and approaches looking quite loaded, we opted for a route... topping out above Coire an t-Sneachda was delightful and included some navigation practice.

Increasing wind and snowfall made the fall-back option of skiing more appealing the following day!! : )
We headed for home as gales and further steady snow made conditions even more interesting...
...which meant I was back in time to take the girls swimming, and for the Kids Kayak Pool Training.
The youngsters completed session 2 of the Level 1 course, working on many fundamental skills exercises, in the form of games and challenges. The coaching team are really impressed with the effort from everyone.
Alongside the structured levels we have designed to provide a performance pathway for paddle sport on the Isle of Man, students and athletes on our programs also fulfil British Canoe Union Awards (BCU) as their skills build.
The youngsters on both the Saturday afternoon training courses have passed their BCU Paddlepower Start Awards. Certificates will be presented next week : )

ps. Got a message from Tony - the Senior Adventure Club had also been training on Saturday, off the East coast of the Isle of Man. Practising rough water landings, re-entry and rolls and wet skills. Looking forward to our session with you all next Saturday!

a winter's day...

Today's Sea Kayaking from Peel on the west coast of the Isle of Man was one of those days you just had to take a few photo's!!
 So I indulged... : )
Following the morning sea kayaking training session with the Adventure Club, (we split into two working pods, one heading North and one paddling South), rock hopping, the afternoon was a beginners sea kayak trip, again exploring the caves and inlets north of Peel.
A really welcome afternoon of large fluffy clouds, warm sunshine, and easy paddling... bliss!!
A few seals about this morning, and the add bird around on the afternoon made for additional bonus's.
Returning to the Castle as the sun dropped over Peel Hill.
Here's to many more winter days like this : )

ps. Congratulations to Jeff and Jayde on passing your BCU 1* Award

Kayak Pool Bonanza!

Today kicked off with the Senior Adventure Club training at the Calf of Man, followed by three Kids Kayak Pool sessions at Western Swimming Pool.
The first indoor pool session was a 12th birthday party, and what a energetic session it was!!
Great to see everyone having a lot of fun, and learning some fundamentals of kayaking too : )

 Kids Kayak Pool Courses

Then followed the first of the Kids Kayak Pool Courses, running over four weeks.
This first session was looking at water confidence, learning to move, balance and enjoy kayaking!
Then straight into the second course, working on the same principles.
Next week will be progression from today's fun and games, also continuing the important team elements.
A really excellent day, and a great to start to Paddlesport for you all! : )
See you on the water soon

kayaking night & day

Its been another active week, with sessions in the Indoor pool as well as out on the sea, including a night paddle in Douglas Bay : )
Tuesday was an Adventure Club only training session in the pool, primarily working towards or refining Eskimo rolling. This followed on after the Youth Scholarship training session which was a night hike including a few hills...
The next Discover Sea Kayaking Indoor course with places begins 25th Feb, and the next Kids Kayak Pool Course with places begins 1st February.
The Tower of Refuge was lit up as normal last night : )
Watching the Steam Packet Co. 'Ben My Chree' finish loading and heading out...
Finishing back at the Queens Hotel by 8:30pm... plenty of shingle beach arranged nearby.
A big thanks to Anouk who made the kayak cake, celebrating the New Year's Day Paddle.
The debrief session was held at Ballabrooie on Saturday.
Chris, sorry you missed the cake... : )
Catch you on the water soon!
