Cairngorms - ice climbing

Coire an t-Sneachda delivers a gift...

An amazing first day in the Cairngorms today. I met Jim in Penrith yesterday and we took an easy drive up to Perth, stopping over in the Station Hotel (£40 per night for a two person room plus a full banquet breakfast! Its the second time we've stayed there and its exceptional value : )

Drove to the Cairngorm ski area this morning, and headed off up the track well after 10am. Andy Nisbet passed us on his way to record another route...
Given the forecast high winds and snow, we'd opted for a warm-up climb, which turned into a conditioning session with flow magic : )

By just after half two we'd done 3 routes (moving as a pair) and stayed warm!!
Beautiful neve conditions in the gully's - we did The Runnel, then Red Gully finishing with Spiral Gully Direct, using the somewhat breezy goat track to decend between climbs.

Although no real technical climbing, it was a great alternative for the stomp up Ben Nevis in the dark, climb the north face gully's and run back down again in the dark... which we'd set our hearts on.
The forecast amending our goals : )

Tomorrow looks another interesting day!!
