National Coasteering Charter

The National Coasteering Charter (NCC) symposium was well attended over the weekend. It was held in Pembrokeshire, where commercial coasteering in its present form was established. The lively event for coasteering guides was organised by Jet and his team at Adventure Beyond.

Workshops included scenario training - joined up with HM Coastguard, and also supported by the RNLI. Lots of fun coasteering experiences and discussion points. AIM insurance and ALLA both had representatives giving chats over the weekend, and joining in the sessions! : )

The weekend was preceded by the NCC National meeting, where the committee made up of voted roles and regional reps from all over the UK come together to share ideas and experiences from each region, and to vote....

 ...in Version 2 of our NCC Documents, which are the Coasteering standard guidelines for providers and guides across the UK, including our environmental Code of Conduct, and the NCC Constitution. 

The National Coasteering Charter represents us, the Coasteering Industry. As such it is the official body that is supported, and just as importantly, recognised, by ALLA, the RNLI, RoSPA, the MCA and the National Water Safety Forum.

The new committee members are Chair - Jethro Moore, Vice chair JP Eatock and Treasurer Mark Agnew, all voted in unanimously.

I've held the post of Secretary (initially of the Coasteering Safety Working Group chaired by the RNLI) and then the NCC since its formation (national meeting - Bristol November 4th 2011).

In the absence of a willing replacement, i've agreed to remain in the role for another 12 months : )

Open boating adventures

Another great weekend of paddling.

The 2 star training course continued on Saturday morning, focusing on manoeuvring and deep water rescues together with a journey up stream. Looking forward to completing the course and assessment next week! 

With Keirron and the sea kayak fleet away for an overhaul at Sea Kayaking UK we took the opportunity for the Sunday club session to also take to canoes and complete a fun journey from Ramsey up the Sulby river and back on the Spring high tide. 

A couple of opportunities to try a few things presented themselves along the way....

Saturday afternoon saw the Junior Paddlesport program taking to the pool together with the adults paddlesport sessions. We've got a couple of spaces on the next Adults indoor safety and rescue course at the Western Swimming Pool running 5-6pm each Saturday from 22nd Nov - 13th December. Contact us to book a place!

A spectacular sea kayak training session this morning with the Adventure Club.

 Setting out from Port Erin beach on the south west coast of the isle of man, the group got involved in some interesting sea conditions. Putting into practice much of what we have been working on since September - continuing the theme of rough water handling...

 ...self rescues in conditions, rolling, re-entries, and other core skills of sea kayaking.

Supported by members of the Senior Adventure Club.

 Immense enthusiasm,and an outstanding performance from everyone!

 Led by George and John, the folks are progressing well, and set to pass their BCU 2 Star Awards by mid-November.
